The classic Chinese fantasy novel Journey to the West is loosely based on a journey made by a Buddhist Monk, in the 7th Century in search of Buddhist scriptures. The Monk has three powerful disciples who protect him on his journey, during which they encounter and overcome several monsters and demons. Encounter some of these monsters, handle objects, make a shadow puppet and more. Part of our CHINA: JOURNEY TO THE EAST exhibition.
11am-4pm: Journey to the West activities
Create your own shadow puppet , see shadow puppets in our CHINA; Journey to the East exhibition and see and touch museum objects.
Drop-in, free, all ages
11-11.30 am & 11.30am-12pm: Folk dancing
Join in traditional Chinese folk dance.
Book on the day (30 places), free, ages 5+
12-1pm: Family Friendly Film screening
Watch short animated films about Diverse Cultures, films include; ‘Ming’, ‘The Heavenly Elephant’ and ‘Maya and the Indian Princess.’
Book on the day, free, under 7s and their families/carers
12pm: Chinese opera performance
A live performance by Chinese opera singers.
Drop-in, free, all ages
1-1.30pm & 1.30-2pm: Martial arts
The characters in Journey to the West use martial arts in their meetings with monsters. Have a go at some martial arts.
Book, free, ages 5+
2-3pm: Storytelling
Young people from the Manchester Chinese Centre will weave a tale from Journey to the West. Come along and join in.
