A workshop for those interested in the history and practice of humanitarianism and material culture.

How and why have humanitarian organisations generated the production of artisanal products and ‘folk’ artwork? How have humanitarians sought to utilise arts and crafts production as a means of engaging humanitarian subjects? What do cultures of participatory handicrafts among donors and supporters tell us about the humanitarian imagination? And what ethical challenges are posed by this form of fundraising and membership through consumption?

The Emily Hobhouse Letters Project and the Humanitarian and Confl ict Response Institute are organising this workshop to explore these and related questions and welcome contributions from academics, humanitarian professionals and craft practitioners.
