Introducing the first speaker in November for the Advances in Biosciences Seminar Series; Kazuhiro Yamamoto PhD, Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences, University of Liverpool.

Venue: Michael Smith Lecture Theatre

The seminar will be hosted by Dr Joan Chang

Title “The extracellular molecule clearance system in tissue homeostasis and destruction”

Abstract: Receptor-mediated endocytosis provides a mechanism for the selective uptake of specific molecules thereby controlling the composition of the extracellular environment and biological processes. My team focus on the low-density lipoprotein receptor–related protein 1 (LRP1), a widely expressed endocytic receptor that mediates clathrin-dependent endocytosis of numerous extracellular molecules. In this seminar, I would like to talk about our original discovery of LRP1-mediated endocytosis of proteolytic enzymes that regulates matrix turnover in articular cartilage and recent findings on its diverse roles in cartilage/bone development, intestinal homeostasis and pulmonary fibrosis.

Speaker Bio: I am a biochemist with a primary interest in regulation of extracellular matrix. After completion of my PhD in Japan, I joined the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology in 2008, as a postdoctoral research associate, where I started to investigate the mechanisms of cartilage tissue destruction by metalloproteinases. I was awarded Versus Arthritis Career Development Fellowship in 2017, which allowed me to establish my own research group in Liverpool. Recently, I was awarded Versus Arthritis Bridging Fellowship to pursue fundamental research aiming to understand the molecular mechanisms that keep healthy cellular environments in adult tissues.
