Capacity development initiatives in global development aim to empower individuals, organisations, and societies to achieve sustainable progress by enhancing their skills and resources. However, these initiatives often encounter persistent challenges that hinder their effectiveness.
These challenges are deeply rooted in long-standing structural conditions that have remained largely unchanged. Common obstacles include short-term perspectives, limited contextual understanding, issues with measurement and accountability, poor integration with broader systems, and difficulties with scaling and sustainability. Achieving a meaningful shift in capacity development requires innovative approaches that address these underlying structural barriers.
In our upcoming Community of Practice meeting, we are pleased to host Jaco Renken from Manchester’s Global Development Institute (GDI), who will guide a discussion on these complex issues. We will explore the use of gamification to support digital health policymakers in the World Health Organisation’s West Pacific region—a case study that highlights innovative approaches in capacity building aimed at overcoming structural challenges that limit the impact of capacity development initiatives.
As always, we welcome participants from various career stages, sectors, and backgrounds. Whether you are an experienced alum focused on capacity development challenges or an undergraduate eager to learn more about working in the development sector, we invite you to join us and share your insights and experiences.
