The ability to manage personal finances is particularly important for older adults, who in addition to managing day-to-day finances, are required to make major financial decisions associated with later life. However, the ability to manage money is highly sensitive to changes in thinking and reasoning skills, which may occur naturally through ageing, or through illness. These changes are stigmatised and often hidden by families. People who struggle to manage their own money are particularly vulnerable to financial abuse.
This webinar will present an overview of the changing landscape of later life finances, and findings from two research projects exploring challenges and support for older adults.
Debora Price and Nicola Glover-Thomas (University of Manchester) will highlight key aspects of later life finance and challenges associated with the law regarding mental capacity in this area.
Sophia Dimitriadis (International Longevity Centre) will present findings from a project exploring challenges faced by people with dementia and their carers when shopping.
Alex Hall (University of Manchester) will present findings from a study exploring perceptions and experiences of support for older adults to manage finances.
Chair: Nicola Glover-Thomas (University of Manchester)
