Senior presenter: Professor Alys Young, “Deaf people with dementia: narrative techniques as cross cultural bridges”
Alys Young PhD, is Professor of Social Work Education and Research and director of the SORD (Social Research with Deaf People) programme at the University of Manchester, and Visiting Professor in the Centre for Deaf Studies, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Her primary research focus is the intersection of d/Deaf and hearing lives whether in the family or in multi disciplinary service provision across the lifecourse. She is the author of over 100 research outputs, remains a registered social worker and is an associate editor of the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education. Her latest book (with B Temple) “Approaches to social research: the case of deaf studies” is published by Oxford in the Perspectives on Deafness Series.
Junior presenter: Dr Katherine Rogers, “Exploring mental well-being with Deaf people”
Katherine Rogers PhD, is formerly a NIHR doctoral fellow and currently a research associate within the SORD group. She was awarded PGR student of the year in 2013 in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work and her research focuses on primary mental health care and Deaf people. She is a trustee of the British Society for Mental Health and Deafness.
About the research series:
The monthly Faculty Research Series events are open to all staff and students from across the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences and the University, offering an opportunity to celebrate research achievement and stimulate scientific interaction. Each month one host School or Institute from the Faculty will pair with a different School or Institute to highlight and showcase similar topics from different perspectives. The 2014 series is led by Professor David Eisner and administered from the Faculty Research Office.
Schedule:
Held on Wednesday lunchtimes, each meeting lasts an hour, including two 20-25 minute presentations – one from a junior and one from a more senior member of Faculty staff. Each presentation will be followed by a short discussion. A buffet lunch will be available from 12.30. Presentations begin at 1pm.
