One of the enduring legacies of Manchester’s industrial boom is the newspaper it brought to birth – the Manchester Guardian. From its offices in Cross Street, The Guardian has grown into a major international title, read online by over 80 million people every month. But newsrooms in the 21st century face huge challenges, from the threat of disinformation to a much more fragmented media landscape.

Join us in the Rylands Historic Reading Room for a conversation between Katharine Viner, editor-in-chief of the Guardian, and Joshi Herrmann, founder of The Mill. They’ll be discussing: How did Manchester shape the Guardian – and how does it stay connected to the city today? How is the Guardian responding to its historic connections to Manchester’s slave trade? What opportunities does today’s media landscape present for small new titles – like The Mill – and large legacy titles, like the Guardian?

The conversation will be followed by a Q&A.
