Join MACFEST for an exciting panel on Legacies of colonialism: Reading and Writing as a Resistance with Emily Zobel Marshall and Leyla Aboulela. A reader in Postcolonial Literature at Leeds Beckett University.

Leila Aboulela, an award winning novelist based in Scotland, will discuss the experiences of racism and colourism faced by Sudanese immigrants to Britain. Author of the renowned 'The Translator' Leila will share her own journey as a writer and discuss how fiction can give voice to the marginalized.

Emily will be discussing her research on cultural resistance to legacies of colonialism and enslavement in the context of the contemporary Black Lives Matter movement. She will share her ancestral Caribbean history and her poetry, to explore how poetry, writing and reading can engender both psychological and political methods of resistance to oppression.

This event will be Moderated by Prof John Mcauliffe, Centre for New Writing, English, American and Creative Writing at The University of Manchester

Chief Guest, Pete Kalu PhD, author, co-Artistic Director, Commonword.
