Prof Makarand Risbud, James J. Maguire Jr. Professor of Spine Research and Director of the Division of Orthopaedic Research at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia will be giving a seminar on Wednesday, 14th February at 12:00 in Room 1.006 AV Hill. "Maintaining the metabolic health of intervertebral disc: Emerging role of mitochondria"; Emerging role of mitochondria; the hypoxic nucleus pulposus cells were thought to contain few, functionally redundant mitochondria. However, in contrast to this widely held notion, new evidence shows the presence of functional mitochondrial networks in disc cells. The seminar will discuss the new evidence and provide insights into how microenvironmental cues govern mitochondrial function. The lecture will also discuss emerging evidence on how mitochondrial dysfunction in nucleus pulposus cells causes metabolic dysregulation and acquisition of a state that promotes degeneration.
Makarand V. Risbud is the James J. Maguire Jr. Professor of Spine Research and Director of the Division of Orthopaedic Research at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. Prof Risbud has published more than 160 peer-reviewed papers (H-index 71) and has pioneered studies on the adaptation of nucleus pulposus cells to the unique hypoxic and hyperosmolar microenvironmental niche of the intervertebral disc. His lab has made significant contributions to understanding nuances of nucleus pulposus cell metabolism and how aging contributes to multiple phenotypes of disc degeneration. He serves on the editorial boards of many scientific journals and NIH grant review panels. He has served as the Chair of the ORS Spine section and convener of biannual ORS-PSRS International Spine Research Symposia. Dr. Risbud is the recipient of the Henry Farfan Award by the North American Spine Society (NASS) for his outstanding contributions to basic spine research and The Professor Fredric Rieders Faculty Prize in Graduate Education by Jefferson College of Life Sciences.
