Join us at the John Rylands Library for a lecture on the Christian Brethren, hosted by David Bebbington, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Stirling.
The John Rylands Library holds extensive collections relating to the history of various Christian movements, including the Christian Brethren. The archive encompasses materials on all sections of the Brethren, whose history spans two centuries and a series of extremely effective global missions, exercising an impact on world Christianity far exceeding its relatively small numbers.
As part of a conference organised by the Brethren Archivists and Historians Network, this lecture explores the most significant historical work produced by the Brethren in the early twentieth century, a collection of biographical memoirs entitled Chief Among the Brethren. Professor Bebbington’s lecture will evaluate the role of the collection’s editor, Henry Pickering, and his purpose in compiling the book, whilst casting light on the nature of this influential Christian movement by illustrating and illuminating its collective memory.
