Please consider yourself warmly invited to attend the 2017 Ferguson Lecture to be held in the Department of Religions and Theology at the University of Manchester. Inaugurated in 1976, the lecture is an annual event in which a leading theologian speaks on a topic of their choice. The list of previous Ferguson lecturers is posted here http://religionandcivilsociety.com/ferguson-lecture/
'A Wisdom of Surprise - Thought, Action, and Amazement at God': Surprises are part of life - in the news, literature, the arts, the sciences, and the shocks and delights of personal life. The Bible is about a God of surprises. The Gospels and Paul in the New Testament are gripped by a radical surprise that goes on springing surprises. The lecture will seek an approach to surprise for the twenty-first century, proposing a spirituality and ethic of wisdom-seeking and daring improvisation.
