Rosana Pineiro Machado - In Person and via Zoom
THE RIGHT TO SHINE: POVERTY, CONSUMPTION, AND THE POLITICS OF PLEASURE IN BRAZIL
Description of the talk :
The talk examines the political impacts on the poor’s subjectivity provoked by neoliberal policies such as inclusion through consumption that emerged during the Workers’ Party administration in 21st century Brazil. How does this political subjectivity manifest? In addition, I seek to analyse whether the fostering of consumer practices could empower the poor. If so, what kind of empowerment does conspicuous consumption promote? This study is based on ethnographic research in a low-income community in Porto Alegre during Rousseff’s Administration (2009-2014).
The seminar is at 16:00pm, via zoom below, as well as in the boardroom if you are in the Arthur Lewis, in the Boardroom,
Second floor, 2.016/017.
