This event is part of CIDRAL's programme for the 2017/18 academic year, 'Constraints of Creativity'.
Enrico Terrinoni (Professor of English Literature, Università per Stranieri di Perugia) will deliver a public lecture entitled, 'Awaking the “plultiple”: translating Joyce’s Finegans Wake into Infinitalian'
The lecture will revolve around the project of “translating” Joyce’s “book of the dark” into Italian. The project started back in 1982 and was interrupted after the death of the first translator, Luigi Schenoni in 2008. It resumed in 2013 with a new team of translators. However, new translation strategies, aware of Joyce’s own experiments with translating the Wake into Italian, are actually guiding the continuation of this work in progress. The talk will investigate the possibility of transposing the Wake into any language at all, and then it will focus on the actual methodology of this new translation. Philosophical aspects dealing with translatability and the implications in terms of rewriting of the act of translating “the impossible”, will also be discussed.
