International PhD researchers are a significant proportion of the university’s PGR community.
However, there is often limited space for reflecting on how supervision relationships and practices can be developed to be more internationally and interculturally inclusive.
In this session, participants can expect to reflect on the processes of working within internationalised supervision teams, considering the common transitions experienced by international PhD researchers and the assumptions often made by their supervisors.
This will be organised across the lifecycle of a PhD – from recruitment to experiences within the programme to considerations for supporting transitions towards employment.
Altogether, participants will leave this session with a greater understanding of easy-to-implement and longer-term-thinking strategies for creating a more inclusive learning environment when supervising international students.
D?r Jenna Mittelmeier is a Senior Lecturer in the Manchester Institute of Education. Her research focuses broadly on the internationalisation of higher education. In particular, she is interested in practices with international students, including the ways they are framed by their universities and wider host societies.
