Castello Duo
James Woodrow - Baroque violin
Mattia Corda - Theorbo
The Castello Duo was formed at the Royal Northern College of Music to explore 17th century violin repertoire with continuo. Its repertoire focuses on the development of the Italian Sonata, the Austrian composers Biber and Schmelzer, and English Baroque violin music. James and Mattia first performed together as part of the RNCM’s production of Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria. This led to a further exploration of the instrumental music of that time, receiving guidance in this repertoire from Paula Chateauneuf. Recent recitals have included Bradford Cathedral, Sheffield Cathedral, Bury Parish Church, St Paul’s, Withington and St Helen’s, York. In 2016, The Castello Duo will perform a lunchtime recital at St Martin-in-the-Fields. As individuals, they have played in period instrument ensembles including The Hanover Band, Charivari Agréable, Fiori Musicali, 18th Century Sinfonia and Britten-Pears Baroque Orchestra.
