Amikam Toren
Amikam Toren transforms humble found objects - thrift-shop paintings, newspapers, furniture, clothing and packaging - into paintings, installations and sculptures, methodically exploring the relations between representation and its subject, form and content, idea and materiality, meaning and interpretation. For over forty years Toren's work has been recognised as much for its unique combination of conceptual rigour and material sensibility as for the wit and intelligent humour with which it draws attention to the often overlooked paraphernalia of everyday existence. Born in Tel Aviv and trained as a painter's apprentice, Toren has lived in London since the late 1960s. He has exhibited widely in Britain, Europe, Israel and recently in the US.
