A sound installation by composer and researcher Patrick Jones, drawing inspiration from a wide range of collections held at the John Rylands Research Institute and Library.
Patrick describes ‘sonillumination’ as the musical equivalent of medieval illumination – the practice of adorning a manuscript with illustrations, grotesque figures, decorative lettering, and other flourishes.
He treats multiple sources from the archives as manuscripts to sonilluminate, in order to create an eclectically strange soundworld. This includes medieval antiphoners, Delia Derbyshire’s notes, and astronomical data recordings from Jodrell Bank Observatory.
Drop in to experience the sounds of the archive from Wednesday 24 July to Saturday 27 July at the Spencer Room of the John Rylands Library.
Installation forms part of a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship hosted by Guildhall School of Music & Drama and funded by the Leverhulme Trust.
