Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 122
Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 12 in D flat, Op. 133
Shostakovich starts to ponder his legacy and the possibility of a cycle of 24 quartets in all the different keys. The classically structured, tensely dramatic Tenth is followed by the seven-movement, sardonic Eleventh, and the two-movement, expansive Twelfth, which explores twelve-note rows and extremes of contemplation and energy.
