Join us for the screening of the documentary about the CARLA Festival of Anti-Racist and Decolonial Art, followed by a round-table conversation and Q&A.
Cultures of Anti-Racism in Latin America (CARLA) is a project exploring how art practice can challenge racism. It is a collaboration between researchers from the University of Manchester, academic partners in Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia, and artists in those three countries. It resulted in a tri-lingual online exhibition curated by CARLA researchers featuring 21 artists and collectives and over 30 artworks.
The documentary screened during the event focuses on CARLA's public Festival of Decolonial and Anti-Racist Art held in Manchester's Contact Theatre in April 2022 which featured many of the artists in person.
It is a unique opportunity to witness the work of artists from Latin America whose artistic practice aims at challenging racial discrimination in their home country. The aim of the event is to generate a conversation around how art practice can challenge racism not only in Latin America, but also in the UK.
The screening will be followed by a round-table discussion with two guest speakers about the project and its implications :
- Dr Mónica G. Moreno Figueroa, Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Fellow in Social Sciences at Downing College at the University of Cambridge and the International Advisor for the CARLA project.
- SuAndi OBE, a Manchester-based poet, writer, and arts curator. She is also the Cultural Director of the National Black Arts Alliance, an organisation working towards raising the profile of black artists in the UK.
The floor will then be open to attendees, both online and in person, for a Q&A session.
The conversation will be followed by a drinks reception held in the foyer of the Samuel Alexander Building at the University of Manchester.
The screening will take place in room A101 in the Samuel Alexander Building at the University of Manchester. Y?ou can also attend the event online via Zoom by following this zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/96375365464.
