Event description

The University of Manchester’s Firs Botanical Grounds is opening its doors – inviting staff, students, alumni and the local community to visit its Living Plant Collections and connect with nature in its tranquil gardens.

A hidden oasis located in Fallowfield in what used to be Sir Joseph Whitworth's garden, the site is one of the oldest continuously running research facilities in the University and has been a centre for plant-based research and teaching for over a century. It is home to the Firs Environmental Research station and the University’s historic living plant collection, including greenhouses and outdoor spaces.

These free events will provide an opportunity to engage with plants and nature, the history of the site, its research and raise awareness of the plans to develop it as a botanical garden for the city of Manchester, providing a hub to explore and help solve the pressing environmental issues of our age.

Come and explore our greenhouse biomes and engage with world leading environmental research conducted at the University of Manchester. Take a journey with one of our educational plant trails around the gardens and wider Fallowfield campus. Or simply have a moment to enjoy this hidden quiet space in busy south Manchester.
