This seminar will introduce the essentials of machine learning and its applications to intelligent system development for machine learning dummies. It covers basic concepts and principles of machine learning including multiple aspects such as what machine learning is, what machine learning can do, what different learning paradigms are and how a machine learning works for a real-world problem. Intuitive examples are given to help audience understand how to apply proper machine learning techniques in developing intelligent systems. Finally, I briefly introduce my Machine Learning and Perception (MLP) Lab at the University of Manchester and review the research conducted in the MLP Lab via several exemplar projects.

This seminar is presented by Dr Ke Chen, Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. Dr. Ke Chen is an academic staff member of School of Computer Science at The University of Manchester. He does research and teaching in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science. His main research interests include machine learning, pattern recognition, machine perception, computational cognitive systems and their applications in intelligent system development. He directs the Lab of Machine Learning and Perception affiliated with the Machine Learning and Optimization Research Group .

He has been with The University of Manchester since 2003. He was with Peking University, The University of Birmingham, The Ohio State University, Kyushu Institute of Technology and Tsinghua University after receiving a PhD in computer science in 1990. He was a visiting senior researcher at Microsoft Research Asia and a visiting professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
