The Whitworth Art Gallery (which is part of the University of Manchester) is running 2 different workshops in July specifically for MAP students. This will be a great opportunity to visit the Gallery, explore some of its collection and take part in some activities. The workshops will also link in to some routes of study at the University. The relationship between light and dark is an eternal theme. Discover key works by great artists William Blake, Anish Kapoor and JMW Turner who all touch upon themes of light as a creative, mysterious, celestial and monstrous force. Consider how light is made and how it conveys and illuminates remarkable narratives. A chance to unpick the meaning of art works and delve deeper into symbolism, whilst gaining an understanding of the physics behind light and its recurrent presence in theology. This workshop aims to provide ways into understanding art and how it relates to contemporary concerns at the time of creation through discussion. This event will suit students considering study of Physics, Theology and Art History. The Manchester Access Programme (MAP) is a structured scheme for local post-16 students who meet specific academic and background criteria. The aim of the programme is to support entry to The University of Manchester, or another research-intensive university, through the completion of a portfolio of work which demonstrates specific knowledge and skills.
