Overview
This session supports colleagues in exploring technology-enhanced active learning, be it as an introduction to the area or as an opportunity to enhance existing teaching practice. We will explore how digital tools can be used to increase engagement, interaction, and collaboration. Drawing on real teaching examples, this interactive workshop will demonstrate how platforms such as Mentimeter, Nearpod, Rise360, Padlet, and Microsoft 365 can facilitate active learning in face-to-face, online, and blended classrooms
This session aligns with innovation, inclusivity and pedagogic development. It showcases practical and innovative uses of digital tools to support active learning across live, blended and asynchronous teaching. It is inclusive in modelling flexible, low-stakes and varied ways for students to engage, and it supports pedagogic development by helping colleagues align technology choices with learning outcomes, engagement and effective teaching practice.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Participants will:
- Define active learning and distinguish it from more passive or teacher-centred approaches.
- Identify key features of effective active learning.
- Explore a range of digital tools that can support active learning
- Recognise how different technologies can be aligned to different pedagogic purposes.
- Reflect on how one or more of the demonstrated active learning approaches can be incorporated in their own teaching practice in an inclusive and accessible way.
