This paper explores the relationship between care and violence through the lens of carelessness, arguing for a more sustained theorisation of how they are entangled and mutually constitutive. While feminist, political, and social geographies have developed rich accounts of care as an ethical relation and political project, and geographical scholarship has examined violence across intimate, structural, and slow registers, these literatures can be brought into productive conversations. I suggest that violence is sustained not only through direct harm, but through forms of carelessness embedded in everyday relations, institutional arrangements, and political–economic conditions that limit access to care. By foregrounding carelessness as a patterned and unevenly distributed condition, the paper shows how attention to care–violence relations offers new insights into how harm is reproduced, contested, and potentially interrupted.
All welcome!
