Abstract: This study examines the formation of collaborative networks in China’s music industry through BADHEAD, a sub-label of Modern Sky, one of the leading music companies headquartered in Beijing. The analysis focuses on two periods, 1999–2008 and 2015–2023. It investigates how participants’ regional origins shape role allocation in music production and influence network formation. Multinomial logistic regression reveals systematic differences in role allocation between Beijing and non-Beijing participants, which are particularly pronounced in the early phase of the industry. Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGMs) indicate that roles predominantly held by Beijing participants facilitate collaboration across both periods. The net effect of regional origin shows no difference for network formation in the early phase, whereas in the later phase, being non-Beijing is more likely to form ties, reflecting broader structural changes in the industry. By examining how the effects of individual attributes on network formation vary across phases of social and industrial change, this study contributes to research on networks in cultural production and provides an initial step toward advancing studies at the intersection of culture and social networks in the Chinese context.
