Overview Team-Based Learning (TBL) is an increasingly prevalent form of teaching: over 3,000 students are now learning through TBL in FBMH, and it is a dominant form of teaching in programmes such as Medicine, Optometry, Dentistry, Nursing, and Biochemistry.

This session aligns with innovation, inclusivity and pedagogic development. It explores TBL as an innovative and structured approach to active learning. It is inclusive in focusing on active participation, accountability, and timely support for students. It supports pedagogic development by helping colleagues align TBL design, facilitation and evaluation with learning outcomes, engagement and effective teaching practice.

This session:

  • supports colleagues in developing their understanding of TBL as a structured approach to active learning.
  • explores the core principles of TBL, the teaching contexts in which it is most effective, and the practical considerations required for successful implementation and facilitation.
  • examines how the online platform LAMS can be used to design and deliver TBL sessions, and how its data visualisation features can support evaluation of teaching materials and early identification of students who may benefit from academic support.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of TBL principles and their impact on student engagement and learning.
  • Identify what constitutes best practice for implementation/facilitation and explain how this is integral to TBL
  • Explain how LAMs (Learning Activity Management System) can be used to design and deliver TBL sessions effectively.
  • Describe how LAMS' data visualisation features can help improve teaching materials and identify students who may require academic intervention.
