An Exploration of Eighteenth Century and Victorian Gothic Literature Displays With the Exhibition Curators
In the midst of the gothic splendour of the John Rylands Library’s, Dr Linnie Blake and Dr Xavier Aldana Reyes, who co-curated the Darkness and Light Exhibition will introduce the historic works contained in the Eighteenth Century and Victorian Gothic literature cases.
They will outline the literary and cultural significance of the texts displayed and the reasons why they chose them.
The event will explore the ways in which gothic writing opens a window on the darker side of these historic periods to illuminate the issues, tensions and anxieties of the age.
Many of the books we will look at are first editions. They include classic works Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, Mary Shelly, Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker and Robert Louis Stevenson.
We will be very happy to answer any and all questions you have about the gothic then and now.
