Erik Stam, Professor of Strategy, Organization and Entrepreneurship, Utrecht University, the Netherlands will be discussing entrepreneurial ecosystems in Africa.
Productive entrepreneurship is highly needed for economic growth and development in Africa. For this to happen, the conditions for productive entrepreneurship need to be improved. However, data on the conditions for productive entrepreneurship in the African continent are scarce, which makes it very difficult to improve these conditions and interventions in a context-specific way. We tackle this challenge and source data from various public, private, global, and African sources. We use an entrepreneurial ecosystem framework to select, make sense of, and integrate this data. We have created an extensive dataset of 21 empirical indicators to measure seven dimensions of national entrepreneurial ecosystems in Africa. With this data we aim to facilitate large-scale research on entrepreneurial ecosystems and collective learning for improving entrepreneurial ecosystems in Africa.
About Erik Stam:
Erik Stam is Full Professor of Strategy, Organization and Entrepreneurship, and academic director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Utrecht University. He is Distinguished University Scholar at the American University in Cairo, and on the advisory boards of Polimi School of Management (Politecnico di Milano) and the Utrecht University Centre for Complex Systems Studies. He is editor of the leading entrepreneurship journals Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Small Business Economics and Foundations and Trends in Entrepreneurship.
He was Dean of the Utrecht University School of Economics and was Extraordinary Professor, and scientific director of the Allan Gray Centre for Africa Entrepreneurship, at Stellenbosch University. He has worked at the University of Cambridge and the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR). He has been visiting professor or scholar at institutes including the Max Planck Institute of Economics (Jena, Germany), University of Oxford, IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, Hitotsubashi University, Indiana University at Bloomington, University of South Carolina, Carnegie Mellon University, Tel Aviv University and Zhejiang University.
He is a leading scholar on entrepreneurial ecosystems. Next to his scientific work he is often consulted by governments, at the local, regional, national, and international level (European Commission, OECD, G20, WIPO, World Bank), and by start-ups, investors and corporates on innovation and entrepreneurship.
