Abstract: In the current global crisis of liberal democracy, a menacing threat of right-wing populism, and war in Europe and elsewhere, a fresh analysis of the Nazi capture of power has renewed relevance. The process by which Germany became a one-party dictatorship was accompanied by an everyday assault on the senses, involving radio broadcasts, flags and the omnipresent threat of street violence. I will ask how Nazi appeals to the senses and emotions helped to mobilise Germans for the ‘national community'.
