Recent technical advances mean it is typically cheaper to produce electricity from renewable sources than from fossil fuels. Yet, around the world, the transition to green energy is happening too slowly if it is happening at all. As Brett Christophers argues, the problem is rooted in the absurdist nature of capitalist priorities: saving the planet on which our lives depend is not sufficiently profitable. Join us for this lecture in which Brett discusses his recent book, The Price is Wrong: Why Capitalism Won’t Save the Planet (Verso, 2024).
Brett Christophers is an economic geographer and Professor at the Institute for Housing and Urban Research at Uppsala University. He has written extensively on the history of the modern financial sector, the financial management of real economic assets, and the effect on the environment from financial management of land and natural resources. His other recent books include Our Lives in Their Portfolios (Verso, 2023) and Rentier Capitalism: Who Owns the Economy, and Who Pays for It? (Verso, 2020).
