This unique presentation is the latest in a series of Entanglements devised by theatre-makers Karen Christopher and David Overend. These informal, hybrid events weave text, film, music and/or movement together with spontaneous conversation amongst participants. Each entanglement brings Karen and David into dialogue with local artists and audiences, exploring creative processes and the possibility of new collaborations.
On this occasion, in Manchester, we are looking at songs and singing as a form of archive. Whether in songs produced by the music industry, or improvised by children, or shared by Iranian carpet-pattern singers, we find complex and idiosyncratic ways in which music and lyrics become archival tools. Songs can be used to interpret and understand particular perspectives and moments in time. They also form the archived soundtracks to our lives—often triggering stored memory and emotion when heard or sung. In Manchester, we will use song to reflect on both the past and the present. Can we create a new song for this moment in time, and sing it together?
