Through oral testimonies of those detained at the immigration prison located on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea, Against Erasure focuses on how the demolition of an immigration prison site erased its violent history. This interdisciplinary research project adopted innovative approaches to produce a digital 3D model as a ‘site of conscience’ bringing into view the neglected histories of state violence at the border.
The workshop will explore the need to preserve the history of this place of violence to honour the suffering of those imprisoned there. Claire will talk about some of the conceptual, political and methodological issues raised by the Against Erasure project and invite discussion around memorialisation.
This workshop is of interest to students of global development, humanitarian studies, critical geography, history and anthropology. The session is more suitable for PGT and PGR students but is open to all.
