The Manchester International Law Centre (MILC) is delighted to invite you to the first event in our International Human Rights Law (IHRL) Guest Speaker Series.
As part of this series, we welcome leading human rights practitioners and experts for short online conversations with students. Speakers reflect on their professional journeys and engage with a substantive human rights issue to which they are particularly committed or currently working on, followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion.
Our first guest is Izza Leghtas, Human Rights Officer at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Bangkok. Her work focuses on the human rights of migrants in the Asia-Pacific region, including labour migration, the rights of migrants in vulnerable situations, and the development of human rights-based narratives on migration. Prior to joining OHCHR in 2023, she worked in research and advocacy roles at Refugees International, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International.
In this session, Izza will discuss current OHCHR projects in the Asia-Pacific region, with particular focus on developing human rights-based narratives on migration. She will reflect on the role of storytelling and public engagement in shaping migration discourse, including insights from the upcoming launch in Kuala Lumpur of a new series of Dari Dapur, an initiative bringing migrant and refugee communities in Malaysia together around food.
All are warmly welcome. To register and receive the Zoom link, please email emma.scali@manchester.ac.uk.
