Branding innovation: place branding through leveraging innovation discourses in the case of Alfred Noel's Karlskoga

Abstract:

We consider a place branding effort implemented as part of a wider strategy for regional development in “Alfred Nobel’s Karlskoga”, a small Swedish city. The municipality has placed its most famous former resident, Nobel, and his innovations, at the heart of its economic development strategy with a three pronged target of attracting tourists, business, and residents to the town through aligning city branding efforts with significant new infrastructural developments. We present an in-depth qualitative case study which unpacks this unique place branding effort: we examine the tensions and complexities surrounding this process, and fill an existing research gap around innovation-based place-branding. __

Rhiannon is currently working on a three year project funded by the research agency FORMAS studying innovation policy in the periphery.
