This is a reminder for our next seminar on Health and Health Systems in the Global Context (HHSGC). This is an interdisciplinary seminar series which aims to bring together researchers interested in broadening the understanding and tackling some of the most pressing challenges faced by health systems globally. The series provides a forum for interdisciplinary exchange, showcasing theoretical and empirical research, policy analysis, and implementation insights from diverse regional, disciplinary and methodological perspectives.

Speaker: Dr Ryan McNeil Topic: Slow violence and North America’s overdose crisis Date: Monday 28 September 2026, 15.00-16.30 Location: University Place 1.218, (in person only and no registration required)

Topic: Slow violence and North America’s overdose crisis

Dr. Ryan McNeil is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Harm Reduction Research at the Yale School of Medicine. His research examines how social, structural, and environmental forces shape risk and harm among people who use drugs. His work focuses on harm reduction, addiction treatment, supervised consumption services, housing and overdose prevention, and approaches to managing stimulant use disorders. His foundational research on harm reduction approaches, including supervised consumption services and safe supply, has informed policy and practice as these interventions have expanded. He regularly provides expert advice to healthcare organizations and governments on the development, implementation, and optimization of harm reduction and addiction treatment programmes. Committed to the meaningful involvement of people who use drugs in all stages of the research process, he collaborates closely with community-based organizations, including peer-driven drug user, sex worker, and tenant rights groups, to ensure that research is aligned with community priorities and shaped by lived experience.
