Join the Faculty of Biology Medicine and Health (FBMH) for our International Men’s Day Event with Josh Anderson, from 'Andy's Man Club', a UK-registered men's suicide prevention charity and peer-to-peer support organisation that provides free, non-judgmental spaces for men to talk about their mental health.
In the UK, men are three times more likely than women to end their own lives. Suicide is also the largest cause of death for men aged 20-49. The reasons for this are complex, however social expectations of masculinity mean that men may be less likely to seek help for suicidal thoughts or behaviours than women.
This event will be online on Microsoft Teams : 12:30-1:30pm. Register via Teams: https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/fe199800-65fb-4a6f-ab75-c00ef1b603c4@c152cb07-614e-4abb-818a-f035cfa91a77
Join us for an insightful lunchtime talk with ANDYSMANCLUB, exploring men’s mental health, breaking down stigma, and the importance of creating spaces where men feel comfortable opening up. The session will share the story behind the charity’s founding in 2016, in memory of Andy Roberts, and how a small group of nine men in Halifax grew into a national movement. Through important statistics, honest conversations and personal lived experiences, we’ll explore the challenges men face when talking about their mental health and the impact that opening up can have. You’ll also learn more about how ANDYSMANCLUB’s free, peer-to-peer support groups work, their commitment to confidentiality, and how men can access support in their local community or online. This talk is an opportunity to raise awareness, challenge perceptions and help create a culture where it’s okay to talk.
We will also be joined at the event by Andrew Porter, the chair of the FBMH Male Allies Network, at the end of the talk there will be the opportunity for questions and discussion.
