Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health Online Seminar Series

We are pleased to invite you to the first COEH Seminar of the semester!

Tuesday October 13th 2026 at 4:00-5:00 PM (BST)

Matt Gittins will present on: The Exposome Project for Health and Occupational Research (EPHOR): Understanding how characteristics of working-life environmental exposures can influence a Health Intervention effect.

Please register for the event online. You will be sent joining details after registration.

Abstract: Exposures in the workplace contribute to many non-communicable diseases (NCDs), ensuring a healthy work environment is a strategic goal for the European Commission, national governments, and businesses. A primary goal is therefore to better understand the heath impact of workplace exposure interventions with respect to NCDs, whilst under complex working-life exposures, demographic changes (e.g. aging workforce) and the rapidly changing nature of work (i.e. the working life exposome). As part of a wider investigation into workplace exposures, we have attempted to understand how changing characteristics of an individual’s exposure profile could change a typical health intervention effect. To do this we have developed a simulation study based on a real-world scenario in which we manipulate the characteristics of the exposures received. We then applied a series of common occupational health interventions to understand how the characteristics of the exposure are important. In this talk I will outline some of the results of our proposed simulated exposure scenarios, the health interventions we imposed, and the effect they had on a simulated health outcome.
