The seminar will unveil emerging work on Ecological Islamophobia: Muslim Experiences of Environmental Harm in East London, examining how environmental issues such as poor air quality, contaminated land, polluted spaces and neighbourhood neglect affect Muslim residents in the London Borough of Newham. Working in partnership with the Sisters Forum and Abbey Mills Mosque, the study explores how environmental harm intersects with faith, identity and everyday life, while highlighting the wider social and health impacts of environmental inequality. Abbey Mills Mosque, which has faced years of uncertainty due to contaminated land, offers an important case study of ecological Islamophobia and its consequences for Muslim communities. This research also lays the foundation for a future AHRC Curiosity Grant, which will compare these experiences with those of a low-carbon eco-mosque to explore how environmental justice can help reframe environmental identity and contribute to a more pluralistic and inclusive Britain in the context of persistent Islamophobia..
