Guernsey-born pianist Tom Hicks, hailed for his magnificent pianism and engaging personality, is a Yamaha Artist with an international profile. He has performed as a recitalist across Europe and the United States. As a concerto soloist, he has appeared on more than 60 occasions, including complete cycles of the Rachmaninoff and Brahms Piano Concertos. He is also an accomplished chamber musician, performing the quintets of Dvorak, Schumann, Schubert, and Brahms, among others.
His latest release, Chopin: The Complete Nocturnes, has earned a Supersonic Award from Pizzicato alongside a review praising ‘the most impressive interpretations possible’. James Harrington (Fanfare) says that ‘this recording now occupies the top position of his list for the complete Nocturnes.’ Hicks’s 2019 album of John Ireland and Tchaikovsky, followed by two 2022 releases: Liszt and Ireland Piano Sonatas for Divine Art, and Blue Sounds for Métier, all received high critical acclaim, and the former was selected for American Record Guide’s Critics’ Choice. He also appears on Augusta Read Thomas’ latest album, having collaborated with her on several original works.
He studied in Guernsey with Mervyn Grand, Manchester with Murray McLachlan, Yale with Boris Berman, and Northwestern with James Giles, earning numerous prizes and a Doctorate in Musical Arts. He launched the Fanny Davies International Piano Series in 2019 and continues to volunteer as Artistic Director, and is Assistant Professor of Piano, Director of the Piano Area, and Artistic Director of the International Piano Series at the College of Charleston.
