This Christmas we will be hosting three consecutive evening lectures which form part of our very popular Lovell Lecture series.
We are delighted to have Professor Tim O'Brien who will be giving a talk on The Radio Sky – Live at Jodrell Bank
When we began using telescopes to view our skies, the sights were astonishing. But this visible Universe is only part of the picture. In the 1940s, Jodrell Bank pioneered our exploration of the Universe using radio waves instead of visible light. This dramatically expanded our horizons – we could see quasars, pulsars and even the fading glow of the Big Bang itself.
In this talk I will make real-time (live) observations with the telescopes at Jodrell Bank to demonstrate how we investigate some of the exciting phenomena in the invisible radio sky.
Tim O’Brien is Professor of Astrophysics in The University of Manchester’s School of Physics and Astronomy and Associate Director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory.
