The Mental Health Act allows involuntary hospital admission, disproportionately affecting black and minority ethnic communities. The Co-PACT Study, funded by NIHR and led by the University of Oxford, employs photovoice and experience-based co-design to document and understand the experiences of those detained under the Act and reduce ethnic inequalities in its use.

Over 500 photos and captions from eight cities in England were produced as part of this research. The Co-PACT Study is hosting an exhibition in Manchester to showcase these photos and captions. This creative approach allows a window into the lived experiences of psychosis and detention. It seeks to foster understanding, reduce involuntary detentions, and promote equity in the application of the Mental Health Act.

Policymakers, organisations, and the public are encouraged to attend.
